American Li-Ion Commits $164 Million Investment
The City of McAlester has reached an interim development agreement with American Li-Ion for a $164 million project in the Steven Taylor Industrial Park. Under the agreement the city will provide approximately 25 acres and construct a new entrance to the site. In return, the company has committed to creating 250 to 300 full-time jobs over five years, with salaries projected in the $65,000 to $125,000 range.
City leaders have described the project as one of the most significant private investments in McAlester’s recent history. Officials say it strengthens the city’s industrial base and positions the community as a location for advanced manufacturing. Progress will be reviewed annually, with performance benchmarks beginning in the second year of operations.
Water and Sewer Upgrades Begin This Summer
The City of McAlester is launching several major water and sewer infrastructure projects in mid- to late July. The largest is a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund project that will replace an existing 14-inch water main with a new 16-inch line. Construction is expected to take approximately 320 days and will be completed in phases.
Additional work includes upgrades to the KFC Booster Station and the Peachtree Sewer Project, which will replace a 24-inch sanitary sewer line with a larger 36-inch line serving the east wastewater treatment plant. These investments are funded through a combination of local resources and state revolving-fund partnerships and are designed to improve system reliability and capacity.
Street Improvements and Other Progress
McAlester continues its street improvement program, which has already completed asphalt overlays on several corridors including portions of Second Street, East Park Avenue, East Morris Avenue, and East Court Avenue. Projects are prioritized using the city’s Infrastructure Management System, which evaluates pavement condition data.
Other recent milestones include the appointment of a permanent city manager and ongoing discussions around potential hotel and mixed-use development. The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant also continues capital investment with a new demilitarization facility, reinforcing the community’s long-standing connection to federal and defense-related activity.
Taken together, the manufacturing commitment, utility upgrades, and steady street work reflect a practical approach to economic development in McAlester—pairing private job creation with the basic infrastructure needed to support both residents and new employers.
